Tuition, accommodation, stipend and insurance — fully funded pathways explained.

The Chinese Government Scholarship, known as the CSC Scholarship, is the most popular and generous fully-funded scholarship available to international students who want to study in China. It is administered by the China Scholarship Council and covers a remarkable range of costs, making it possible to study in China with almost no personal financial burden. The scholarship includes full tuition coverage, free on-campus accommodation, a monthly stipend, and comprehensive medical insurance. The stipend is CNY 2,500 per month for bachelor students, CNY 3,000 for master students, and CNY 3,500 for PhD students, which is enough to live comfortably in most Chinese cities.

Applications open in early December and close in early April, though some universities close earlier. You apply through the CSC online portal, and there are two main pathways. Type A means you apply through your home country's Chinese embassy or consulate, and the embassy nominates you. Type B means you apply directly to a specific Chinese university, and the university recommends you. Most students prefer Type B because it is more straightforward and you have direct contact with the university. Under Type B you may apply to up to three universities, each as a separate application.

Eligibility requires that you are a non-Chinese citizen, in good health, and meet the age limits: under twenty-five for bachelor, under thirty-five for master, and under forty for PhD. You need strong academic records, and language proficiency depending on the program. For Chinese-taught programs, HSK 4-6 is usually required; for English-taught programs, IELTS 6.0+ or TOEFL 80+ is expected.

The required documents include a valid passport, highest diploma notarized, transcripts notarized, two recommendation letters from professors or associate professors, a foreigner physical examination form, a study plan of at least 800 words, and passport photos. The study plan is the most important document. It should explain why you chose China, why you chose this university and major, your academic background, and your career goals. Be specific and show genuine research about the program.

After submission, track your application status online. Universities review and shortlist in April and May, final results come in July, and scholarship letters are issued in August. Successful students receive the admission notice and JW2019 form, which they use to apply for the X1 visa. This article explains everything you need to know about eligibility, documents, timelines, and writing a winning study plan for the CSC scholarship.
