It is also one of the most affordable, which makes it a favorite for international students. Accommodation is your biggest fixed cost. On-campus dormitories at Sichuan University and other Chengdu universities cost about 200 to 280 dollars per month for a double room. A single room runs 280 to 350 dollars. Off-campus shared apartments start around 250 dollars for a room, with nicer places reaching 400. Food is the second biggest expense. Campus cafeteria meals cost one to two dollars, and a student eating two cafeteria meals plus breakfast spends about 150 dollars per month. If you eat out a few times a week at local restaurants, add another 40 dollars. A realistic food budget is 190 dollars per month.
Transport is cheap. Metro rides are about fifty cents, and shared bikes cost pennies. A monthly transport budget of 30 dollars covers daily commuting and occasional Didi rides. Add 10 dollars for a weekend trip across the city.
Phone and internet cost about 10 dollars per month for a generous data plan. Utilities in a dorm are usually included, but if you live off-campus budget 30 dollars for electricity, water and gas. For this budget we include 10 dollars for phone plus a small utilities allowance, totaling 20 dollars.
Entertainment and socializing vary by lifestyle. A hotpot dinner with friends costs 10 to 15 dollars. A cinema ticket is 5 dollars. A night out in the Kuanzhai Alley or Jinli Street area costs 20 to 30 dollars. A realistic monthly entertainment budget is 80 dollars.
