City Overview

Chengdu is the relaxed, food-obsessed capital of Sichuan and the gateway to western China — famous for giant pandas, teahouses, hotpot and a famously unhurried pace of life. Beneath the slow surface it is a fast-growing tech, gaming and aerospace hub, home to Tencent's largest second office, miHoYo (Genshin Impact) and a booming creative sector. For students it offers a distinctive southwestern culture, very spicy food, mild winters, low living costs and a strong international student community around Sichuan University and UESTC.

Transportation

Chengdu's metro is one of western China's largest and still expanding, connecting both Tianfu and Shuangliu international airports. High-speed rail reaches Xi'an in 3 hours and Chongqing in 1.5 hours. Buses and ride-hailing cover the rest, and shared bikes are everywhere in the flat central districts. The city is a major rail-and-air hub for all of southwest China and Tibet.

Safety

Chengdu is among the safest and most laid-back major cities in China. Nightlife districts like Jiuyanqiao stay lively until late, and students move about freely. The only real hazards are the famously fiery local food and summer humidity; standard urban caution applies.

Weather & Climate

Mild and humid subtropical: summers warm and muggy (25–32 °C) but rarely extreme, winters cool and damp (4–10 °C) with no central heating — locals rely on electric heaters and hotpot. Rainfall is moderate year-round, and the city is famously cloudy, with fewer than 100 sunny days a year. Bring layers and a good raincoat.

Jobs & Career

Chengdu leads western China in gaming, animation, software, aerospace and electronics — Tencent, miHoYo, Foxconn, Intel and Huawei all have major operations. The Tianfu Software Park is a magnet for tech interns and graduates. The city's lower cost of living and livability make it a top destination for young professionals escaping coastal costs; Sichuan University and UESTC graduates are heavily recruited nationally.

Student Life

Chengdu's student life is legendary: teahouse afternoons, mahjong in parks, pandas at the Breeding Base, hotpot with classmates, the Wide and Narrow Alleys, Jinli old street, live-music bars along the Jin River, and an enormous gaming and anime subculture. The city is a national leader in indie music, street art and esports. International students cluster around Sichuan University, UESTC and SWUFE, and the vibe is warm and social.

Food & Cuisine

The global capital of spicy food: Sichuan hotpot, mapo tofu, kungpao chicken, dan dan noodles, twice-cooked pork, and the mouth-numbing Sichuan peppercorn in everything. For those who can handle heat, Chengdu is paradise; for those who can't, sweet-and-sour and non-spicy Sichuan dishes exist too. The city also has one of China's liveliest tea-snack and street-barbecue cultures.
