Study in Chongqing

Chongqing is China's largest municipality by population — a 32-million-person mountain mega-city at the confluence of the Yangtze and Jialing rivers, famously built on steep hills with a futuristic skyline that has made it China's most photogenic 'cyberpunk' city. It is the economic engine of western China and a major auto, electronics and logistics hub. Chongqing University and Southwest University anchor its academic base. For students it offers dramatic scenery, fiery Sichuan-adjacent food, low costs and a distinctive, warm southwestern identity.

Chongqing's metro is among the world's most dramatic — lines run through mountains, over rivers and even through a building at Liziba. It connects to Jiangbei International Airport and major high-speed-rail stations (Chengdu in 1.5 hours). The hilly terrain limits cycling; buses, monorail and ride-hailing dominate. Navigation can be confusing — a 'ground floor' may be the 22nd — but the transit system is extensive and cheap.

Chongqing is safe and famously welcoming, with a hot-tempered but friendly local culture. Crime is low; the main practical hazards are the steep stairs and summer heat. Pedestrian caution is needed on the many elevated walkways. The city stays lively late, especially around Jiefangbei and Hongyadong.

Subtropical with hot, very humid summers (28–36 °C) — Chongqing is one of China's 'furnace cities' — and mild but damp winters (6–12 °C) without central heating. Rain and fog are frequent (the city is known for 'fog city'). Bring light clothing, a dehumidifier, and a warm heater for winter; summer air conditioning is non-negotiable.

Chongqing is western China's manufacturing and logistics leader — autos (Changan), electronics (BOE, Foxconn), motorcycles, chemicals and a booming cross-border e-commerce sector. Internships in manufacturing, supply chain, logistics and e-commerce are accessible. The city's lower costs and aggressive talent policies draw graduates; Chongqing University and Southwest University graduates are recruited across western China.

Chongqing's student life is dramatic and social: hotpot with classmates on a mountainside, the Hongyadong stilt buildings lit at night, Liziba train-through-building, Ciqikou old town, Yangtze cable car rides, night cruises past the lit skyline, and a famously fiery local food scene. Chongqing University's campus sits in the central hills. The international community is growing but smaller than Chengdu's; the vibe is warm, loud and proudly local.

Chongqing hotpot is legendary — numbing-spicy beef tallow broth with offal, the city's signature dish. Beyond hotpot: Chongqing noodles (xiaomian), spicy chicken, grilled fish, and sour-spicy vermicelli. The food is hotter and oilier than Chengdu's, with a deep street-snack culture. Non-spicy options exist but are harder to find; the food culture is a genuine highlight and a challenge.
