City Overview

Hangzhou is the capital of Zhejiang and one of China's most beautiful and prosperous cities, framed by the misty West Lake — a UNESCO World Heritage landscape that has inspired Chinese poetry for a thousand years. It is also the home of Alibaba and a global leader in e-commerce, fintech and digital economy. Zhejiang University ranks among China's top institutions. For students it offers a rare blend of natural beauty, ancient culture and cutting-edge tech, only 45 minutes from Shanghai by high-speed rail.

Transportation

Hangzhou's metro is modern and expanding across the city and to Xiaoshan International Airport. High-speed rail reaches Shanghai in 45 minutes and Beijing in 4.5 hours. The city is bike-friendly — public shared bikes were pioneered here — and the West Lake area is walkable. Ride-hailing and shared bikes make commuting cheap, and student discounts keep transit affordable.

Safety

Hangzhou is exceptionally safe and well-managed, with low crime, clean streets and an orderly digital-first administration (it was China's first cashless city). West Lake stays busy and safe late into the evening; the main seasonal concern is summer heat and the occasional typhoon.

Weather & Climate

Subtropical monsoon: hot humid summers (28–34 °C), mild winters (3–10 °C) without central heating (bring a good heater), and famous misty springs. June brings plum rains; autumn is the loveliest season with fragrant osmanthus. West Lake light rain is part of the city's charm.

Jobs & Career

As Alibaba's home and China's e-commerce capital, Hangzhou leads in digital economy, fintech, livestream commerce, cloud computing and gaming — with Ant Group, NetEase and thousands of startups. Internships in e-commerce operations, product and marketing are abundant and English-friendly. The city offers one of China's most generous talent-hukou policies, drawing graduates from across the country, especially in tech and digital marketing.

Student Life

Hangzhou blends classical Chinese beauty with a digital-economy buzz: cycling around West Lake at dawn, tea villages in Longjing, the Xixi wetlands, Song Dynasty theme park, the Alibaba campus tours, indie cafés along the Grand Canal, and a thriving startup-meetup scene. Zhejiang University's Zijingang campus is one of China's largest and most modern, with a large and active international student body.

Food & Cuisine

Hangzhou food is delicate Zhejiang cuisine: West Lake fish in vinegar, Dongpo pork, beggar's chicken, longjing shrimp and lotus root. The city is also a national tea capital — Longjing (Dragon Well) green tea is grown in surrounding hills. Cafés and international dining are strong around West Lake and Qianjiang New City, and prices are reasonable for a top-tier city.
