City Overview
Hefei is the capital of Anhui province and one of China's fastest-rising science and technology cities, home to the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) — one of the country's most elite institutions — and a national centre for quantum computing, AI and fusion energy research. Once a quiet provincial capital, Hefei has become a major tech-manufacturing base (BOE, NIO, Chang'an Autos) and a quieter, affordable alternative to the coastal megacities for serious science and engineering students.
Transportation
Hefei's metro is modern and growing, with lines reaching the high-speed-rail hub at South Station — Shanghai in 2 hours, Beijing in 4 hours — and Xinqiao International Airport. The city is a regional rail crossroads. Buses and ride-hailing cover university areas around USTC and the new lakeside district; shared bikes serve the flat central districts.
Safety
Hefei is a calm, safe and rapidly modernising city with low crime and a strong academic atmosphere. As a research-focused city it is quiet and orderly; the main adjustment for international students is the less international dining scene compared with Tier 1 cities. Standard urban precautions apply.
Weather & Climate
Subtropical with four seasons: hot humid summers (27–34 °C), cool damp winters (0–8 °C) without central heating in older housing (newer apartments have it), pleasant spring and autumn. Plum rains arrive in June. Bring layers and a dehumidifier; summers are warmer than they look on paper due to humidity.
Jobs & Career
Hefei is a national leader in quantum computing, AI, displays (BOE), electric vehicles (NIO's HQ), voice tech (iFlytek) and fusion energy — a remarkable concentration of deep-tech for a provincial capital. Internships and research positions at USTC-linked labs are elite; graduates in physics, computer science and engineering are heavily recruited. The city's talent incentives are aggressive as it competes to retain tech graduates.
Student Life
Hefei's student life centres on USTC and Hefei University of Technology, with a serious academic atmosphere, lakeside parks around Swan Lake, Chao Lake day trips, and a growing café and mall scene in the new district. The international student community is smaller and more science-focused; social life leans campus-based. Living costs are low and the city is green and walkable in the new districts.

Food & Cuisine
Hefei and Anhui (Hui) cuisine is hearty and earthy: Luzhou roast duck, stinky mandarin fish, bamboo-shoot stewed dishes, and rich slow-cooked pot dishes. The dining scene is less international than coastal cities but has good Cantonese, Sichuanese and Western options in the new district. Street food around USTC is cheap and generous.
