City Overview
Xi'an is the ancient capital of thirteen dynasties and the eastern terminus of the Silk Road — home of the Terracotta Army, the Ming city wall and a thousand years of Chinese civilisation. Today it is also a major aerospace, defence-electronics and semiconductor hub, hosting Xi'an Jiaotong University (a C9-era elite) and Northwestern Polytechnical University. For students it offers a deeply historic setting, very low living costs, an authentic northwestern culture and a strong engineering reputation.
Transportation
Xi'an's metro is expanding steadily across the city and connects to the airport and high-speed-rail hub at North Station — Beijing in 4.5 hours, Chengdu in 3 hours, Shanghai in 6 hours. Buses and ride-hailing serve the historic centre and the southern university district. Cycling atop the Ming city wall is a local highlight.
Safety
Xi'an is safe, traditional and welcoming. Crime is low and the tourist-heavy historic centre is well policed. Winter air quality can be poor due to the surrounding basin and coal heating — sensitive students should keep an air purifier and an N95 mask handy through winter months.
Weather & Climate
Temperate with four distinct seasons: hot summers (25–33 °C), pleasant autumns, cold dry winters (−3 to 5 °C) with central heating, and dry springs with occasional dust from the Loess Plateau. The basin geography traps pollution in winter, so check AQI. Bring a warm coat and layers.
Jobs & Career
Xi'an leads western China in aerospace, defence electronics, semiconductors and AI — Samsung's largest overseas NAND flash plant is here, alongside AVIC and Huawei research. Engineering and electronics internships are strong. Xi'an Jiaotong University graduates carry elite reputation across China, and the city's talent incentives plus low costs attract young engineers priced out of the coast.
Student Life
Xi'an's student life is historic and affordable: the Muslim Quarter's food markets, the Great Mosque, the Terracotta Army, Tang Dynasty shows, cycling the city wall, the Big Wild Goose Pagoda fountain show, and a youthful tech scene around the Yanta university district. Living costs are among the lowest of any major Chinese city, letting students live well and travel widely.

Food & Cuisine
Xi'an is a paradise of northwestern wheat-food and Silk Road flavours: biangbiang noodles, roujiamo (the 'Chinese hamburger'), mutton paomo, lamb skewers, liangpi cold noodles and rich Hui-Muslim cuisine. The Muslim Quarter is a national food destination. Portions are huge, prices are low, and the blend of Han and Central Asian flavours is unique among Chinese cities.
